Success

What is success?

Over the years I have never felt particularly successful because of the socially constructed image of what success is.

You get a career, you get married, you have kids, you get promoted, you buy a house, you then buy a bigger house and so on and so on.

Social media is really not a helpful tool sometimes because we see the images posted by friends and maybe somewhere inside we see what they have as the success we desire. I have felt this way.

Over the past 12 months though I have started to look at things differently. Success should only be measured by what we want it to be. When I delve retrospectively into my 42 years I can see how much I really have succeeded.

I have lived in 3 countries, travelled to 14. I have had a job where I have been promoted. I have a great family. I have started 3 different businesses and each in their own way garnered some level of success, even if this success was not financial.

Then if I delve deeper I also find success in small things. Things that I do on a daily basis. Teaching lessons, seeing the reaction of students, making people laugh and smile. To me that it also a measure of success.

Don't be driven to analyse the lives of others, especially on social media, because success has to be measured from within yourself.

Let's be honest, on Facebook or Instagram we only see a snapshot of someone else's life, a snapshot that they want to share because maybe it will get likes or comments. I don't think it's healthy to continually live like that.
